Ariel Rodal-Spieler: Israel and U.S. Jewry Can we Heal the Growing Divide?
On May 2nd at 11:00 am (MST), we have a guest speaker via Zoom from Tel Aviv. Ariel Rodal-Spieler is a member of the World Jewish Congress’s Speakers Bureau. She has a master’s degree in diplomacy and security from Tel Aviv University. She currently works as a writer and translator for several Israeli publications and is the chief journalist for the IDC Herzliyan Magazine.
Israel has been in a state of political turmoil for the past several months. The new government of Benjamin Netanyahu is a coalition government that is a more right-wing government than prior administrations and is composed of Likud along with other right-wing and religious parties.
As part of their agenda, they are proposing to make several changes in Israeli law that are controversial. This is especially true in regard to Israel’s Supreme Court. This has sparked huge civil demonstrations and protests in Israel. The outcome of this political crisis is currently unclear.
What are American Jews supposed to do? This is not the first time that American Jewry and Israel have had strained relationships. Many American Jews may be troubled by some of the proposed changes to laws within Israel. How do they understand what is happening and how do they respond? The special relationship that has always existed between the American Jewish community and the State of Israel must survive the current crisis.
She will be talking from Israel via Zoom. Please note the program will begin at 11:00 am Sedona (MST) and last about 90 minutes, including time for audience interactions. There is no charge for this program.
