Erev Purim – Megillah Reading

March 6, 2023
5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Megilla Reading at the JCSVV

Purim is that holiday of dressing up, wearing masks, and making a lot of noise to drown out the name of the villain in the story.  Actually, while disguising our usual features, the mask and costume reveal something about us.  In the same way, the Megillah of Esther is all about the hidden and revealed – the identity of the characters, the fate of each, and the presence of the Holy One who is hidden but not named or quoted in the text.

We will observe the mitzvah of reading the Megillah on Erev Purim, Monday, March 6 at 5:30 pm in person and on zoom.  All are encouraged to wear a funny hat, or a colorful costume, or a mask (that allows you to see the text). The megillah will be chanted or read by the rabbi and members, with sections in Hebrew and other verses in English.  There will be some discussion afterward about the message and symbolism of the megillah, and will enjoy noshing on home-baked hamantaschen. We’ll sing some fun Purim songs as well.
