SUMMARY:Weekly Torah Portion: Chukat Balak
DESCRIPTION:This week’s Torah portions:  Chukat and Balak.  Chukat is found in Numbers 19:1-22:1. God instructs Moses and Aaron regarding the red heifer. Miriam\,  the sister of Moses and Aaron\, dies. Moses hits a rock to bring forth water rather than speaking to it. At the end of the portion\, Aaron dies. Balak\, Numbers 22:2 – 25:9\,  presents the story of Balak\, the king of Moab\, who persuades the prophet Balaam to curse the Israelites so that he can defeat them and drive them out of the region. However\, Balaam blesses the Children of Israel instead and prophesies that Israel’s enemies will be defeated. That curse-turned-to-blessing is recited in the morning prayers when entering the synagogue! “How goodly are your tents\, O Jacob; your dwelling place\, O Israel.”

SUMMARY:Weekly Torah Portion: Shelach Lecha
DESCRIPTION:At the Erev Shabbat service\, a selection will be chanted from this week’s Torah portion: Shelach Lecha (Numbers 13:1-15:41). In this Torah portion\, Moses sends 12 scouts to explore the Land of Israel. Ten of them convince the people that it will be too difficult to conquer the land. As a result\, the people will endure 40 years of wandering in the wilderness before entering the Promised Land with Joshua.

SUMMARY:Weekly Torah Portion: Beha'alotecha
DESCRIPTION:The Torah portion of the week is Beha’alotecha (Numbers 8:1-12:16) in which the Israelites receive instructions regarding Passover.  They journey forth from Sinai and complain to God on several occasions\, provoking God’s anger. Miriam and Aaron speak against Moses. When Miriam is stricken with a scaly affliction\, Moses offers a short heartfelt prayer for her healing. That prayer is the basis for our healing prayers today.
